About the Group

What’s Eating You (WEY) Peer support group has three parts. We offer a FREE, in-person group sessions, a FREE Zoom support meetings and a FREE PRIVATE Facebook group.  This is an all-volunteer peer support group with no intention or design to provide therapy.  The focus of this group is to educate and support individuals with an eating disorder or any form of disordered eating. Depending on where you are on your recovery journey, we may advise treatment with a psychologist, psychiatrist, therapist, dietician or other specialized eating disorder (ED) services such as intensive outpatient (IOP) care if you are not currently in treatment.

The PRIVATE Facebook group for individuals who would benefit from honest discussions, educational topics and shared the experiences with topics such as body image, internal struggles with the food we eat and how that makes us feel. We all have that internal voice that makes us feel a certain way about certain things.  It doesn't have to be shameful or kept hidden.

From the "Big Book" - The second phrase in Step 12 reads: "we tried to carry this message to others" and another oral translation, "You can't keep it unless you give it away".  This reinforces our recovery by sharing it with others - which is exactly what this group is all about.

About the Founder

My name is Stephanie and I am a NY State Certified Peer Support Specialist and like most women, I have struggled with body image and my relationship with certain foods has been cautionary at best.

It's easy to joke with family and friends about how we look, but what about the thoughts and feelings associated with the jokes?   The ones that silently lurk within us, waiting for the perfect time to surface to remind us how "this" or "that" we are.  Those that fill us when we see our reflection or feel like we are being judged by others.  Is this you?  Does this sound familiar?

I have had, and continue to have amazing people who support me, but not necessarily those that can understand my view of me.  This is where the idea of this group first started.   As the years passed and my desire to help others struggling with ED, disordered eating or body dysmorphia continued to grow, so did my resolve to make this group a reality.  To create a safe place where like-minded individuals could talk openly and be understood, be heard.  Sharing and supporting each other in ways that only we can.

Additional Group Support

Christine Porter is a retired Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW-R) with 45 years experience working with individuals and families.  Trained in cognitive behavioral treatment, acceptance and commitment therapy and treatment with adults with a history of childhood trauma. “This peer support group fills a need in our community that I feel strongly about. There’s incredible strength in sharing one’s personal journey toward healing; and both providing support to and accepting the same from others. I was honored to be invited to participate."
